York Road was built in 1824 as part of the construction of Waterloo Bridge and named after York House which was erected nearby in about 1475 by the Archbishop of York. Henry VIII is said to have met Anne Boleyn at York House. From 1753-6 it housed the Battersea Enamels factory where John Brooks invented transfer printing.
